Ticket system for tourists at Goa’s Aguada fort

Aesthetically, it is one of the best addresses in Goa and the Bollywood hit “Dil Chahata hai” was one of many movies shot there. The hilltop fort of Aguada which offers visitors a mouthwatering view of the Arabian Ocean, the city of Panaji and the mouth of the River Mandovi, daily attracts hordes of tourists from India and abroad. So far the thrills were free.

But now, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which is the guardian of the fort, plans to introduce a ticket system for tourists, Goa tourism minister Dilip Parulekar told the Goa legislative assembly on Thursday. Asked whether the government proposed to develop and beautify Aguada fort and church for promotion of tourism, Parulekar said that the government has no such proposal.

He said the Aguada fort has been declared a monument of national importance by the government of India and that it is maintained by the ASI. The conservation and preservation of the upper and lower fort of Aguada is being carried out regularly as per the approved conservation plan by ASI. Also, the ASI has already provided tourist amenities like drinking water, toilets and brochures on upper fort of Aguada.

With large number of tourists flocking to the fort, the ASI is planning to introduce ticket system, Parulekar said.
